A few things worth knowing before you roll toward the sea
Coastal routes often have less elevation but stronger headwinds. Check the forecast and plan your direction accordingly — riding with the wind makes a huge difference.
Sea air is hard on chains and cables. Rinse your bike after rides near the ocean and keep it well lubricated. A simple wet lube works wonders.
Many of the best coastal routes involve short ferry hops. Check schedules in advance — especially in the Hebrides, Croatia, Japan’s Shimanami Kaido, and the Florida Keys.
There’s often little shade on open coastal roads. Pack sunscreen, a light long-sleeve, and more water than you think you’ll need.
